well now lets just get started.
chinese opera or chinese dance? in my opinion both of them are different. but in terms of being specific, it doesnt really matter anymore as the opera is a development from the dance. it is just a different aspect of translating what exactly chinese aesthetics is about. the beauty of chinese performance art lays in the formless being, in chinese words, its 诗情(the mood of poetry) and 画意(the meaning of painting). that means that chinese art has to be perceived in the untangible meanings of things.
in opera, it is perceived in the state of imaginary. for example two chairs which are stacked together in differrent ways compell different meanings. of course the layman would never understood (so for 100 people there will be 100 types of understanding for chinese opera. ) that but for an opera- goer, surely you gotta know the meanings behind it. that is the so called " formalisation" in chinese art. in the way they move, they act, they dress and the makeup and so forth.
in chinese dance, the movements are too formalised. the state of art howeve, is more flexible that chinese opera as it is actually a transformation and regeneration of dance from different races and ethnics. that makes dance more fun as it is more for the open public. it is considered as more folk lore and more popular, in a way.
