architectural studies 1

0210am, 21 march 2005
1.in every project, you learn sthg new, says my tutor mr fong. yes, i agree, for i m searching to learn, desperately, to be able to pick up the grammar and the vocabs of architecture correctly.
2.there is no true originality in architecture, says my tutor. one thing that i get to know, after juz browsing thru the arch magazines and books, and astounded to find out tt alot of ideas are similar, alot of similar projects had been realized, alot of works are so related in some ways..my P1, for instance, is juz there~in the magazine!!!(goodness me...)
3.architecture does not come in randomness, architecture comes in packages. every master takes a little package and explore, like how sejima does, says my tutor. he meant that she explores the detail and the lightness of architecture. this is new to me..oh, architecture comes in packages, interesting, juz like shopping. u pick and choose what u wan, and sieze the unwanted, and that becomes ur labelled invention. cool~
4.logic does not define architecture. for this i m a bit confused. in my previous warren and darlyne studio, warren told me that there is a certain logic in architecture. and everything has to be rational. i m not so sure about my own stands, so i think i will believe both first. maybe logic is always there, but it does not necessary to appear in every architecture. anyway, i will be able to find it.
5.progress!evolute but do not revolute, u hav started too many times, jiamei, says my tutor. yes, i totally agree. yes, i m not decisive enough. yes, i really hav 2 make up my bloody own mind. yes, some times, too many flavour spoil the broth. yes, u gotta be fast and furious!
6. concept->synthesis->design, says my tutor warren. he is a keen believer tt a strong concept will be able to lead the way. oh yes, this is true. i always got lost in concepts. and great master always have great concepts!
7.do precedent studies even though you are practising, says my tutor warren. he told us that he is still learning the great works of great master these days. i surely will do it. and dun juz browse and copy and paste, he says, read the plans, elevation and sections. ok, till now i still struggle to read them, sometimes, perspective is far more easy.
8.think spaces, think how the user percieves them. light and shadow, scale and proportions, material and materiality, threshold, duree, time and circulation, geometry and tectonics.
9.architecture is communication.
10.the context does not determine the design. site analysis juz help u to define the suitable design. sort of ..
